So first review in a long time on here. Couldn't come up with something better than reviewing one of the most unexpected good movies Ive seen ever. Saw Star Trek the other day and quickly became a fan of the franchise. Ive never seen a minute of the TV show and everything I knew about the franchise was well basically just William Shatner and millions of nerd fanboys.
So with that said I headed into a blockbuster with no previous knowledge. Somewhat like I did with Transformers (didn't really think that was great). Unlike most blockbuster movies there are always cheesey scenes that take you out of the experience. You know like the bad/good guy lighting a match and walking away and in the background you see some major explosion. Well none of that shit in here. This movie starts from the ground up and keeps a perfect balance between action and drama.
Much credit must go out to JJ Abrams and the Bad Robot crew. They definitely have shown their Lost skills on this. Whether its the great orchestra giving the soundtrack or its the almost perfect casting of children portraying the older Spock and Kirk. The acting from all of the cast is pretty good. I mean as good as it will get for a Star Trek film. On top of that I think the way they cast is perfect because there really isnt one big star that takes you out of the whole movie. I didn't even know Eric Bana was the bad guy until I went on IMDB.
A couple of the bad things about the movie were the blatant product placement. Nokia and Budweiser are pathetic. Still in this day your used to product placement in big movies. God watching the Transformers 2 trailer was like a Chevy commercial.
So dont want to give much away but I highly recommend you go see this at the movies (needs a big screen) even if you've never seen the series like me. Have a feeling this will be the first of many Star Trek movies but at least this franchise is actually watchable unlike others.
